Turning hive routine into spoken demonstration: the skill the Basic Assessment actually asks for
The Basic Assessment is structured around practical beekeeping knowledge demonstrated at the apiary, so revise by performing tasks and explaining them aloud, not by re-reading notes. Silent familiarity is not the same as demonstrable craft.
Most experienced beekeepers inspect a colony on autopilot: lift, look, decide, move on. An assessment reverses that. You must notice what you are doing, say why, and keep the colony calm while doing it. Practising narration changes what you notice, because you cannot explain a frame you have only glanced at. Build the habit weeks ahead: every time you handle a frame, name what you see before you form a conclusion.
Structure your spoken routine so it covers the sequence an assessor will follow. Open the hive with a reason for the visit, smoke and handle gently, remove and read one brood frame completely, state what the stores, pollen and brood pattern tell you, and close with a judgement about what the colony needs next. Rehearsing that arc repeatedly is more useful than memorising isolated facts, because it forces the facts into the order in which you will actually need them.
AFB versus EFB: the frame-level signs you must separate with confidence
American foulbrood kills sealed brood with sunken, perforated cappings and a sticky, roping scale; European foulbrood attacks unsealed larvae that look melted and twisted in the cell. Learn the differences as paired contrasts.
The two foulbroods are notifiable in the UK, which is why examiners care about recognition. Work the contrasts at the frame: AFB lives inside sealed cells, so the clue is capping changes — sunken, greasy, perforated patches — plus larvae that turn brown, decompose into a sticky mass, and rope out when drawn with a matchstick before drying to a hard scale glued to the cell wall. EFB shows earlier, in the open brood: larvae discolour, twist unnaturally, and melt down in their cells without the roping test result.
Learn the healthy baseline just as carefully, because you can only recognise abnormal against it. A good frame has solid, pearly-white C-shaped larvae in a compact pattern, crisp cappings, and no scattered, patchy brood without cause. Drill the full set of look-alikes: chalkbrood gives white or grey chalky mummies, sacbrood gives a watery sac-like larva, and chilled or starved brood gives scattered dead larvae without infectious signs. Practising this discrimination on real or photographed frames is the study task; reciting symptom lists from memory is not.

Swarm control as a decision, not a list: choosing a Pagden artificial swarm or a nuc split
Swarm control questions reward reasoning from the colony's state: whether queen cells are charged, how far the cycle has run, and which named method fits. Practise the decision with scenarios rather than memorising one procedure.
Scenario one: during a May inspection you find two sealed queen cells on the bottom edge of a frame, in a strong double-brood colony that was packed with bees last week. The tempting shortcut is to scrape the cells off and assume the problem is solved. That is the mistake — sealed cells mean the colony may already be committed, and removing cells without addressing the swarm impulse often just delays departure, sometimes with a cast afterwards.
The better decision is to work a named method deliberately. A Pagden artificial swarm mirrors what the bees intend: move the parent colony with the laying queen to a fresh position, leave the queen cells with the original flying-bee population in the old site, and destroy all but one good cell or let them requeen. A nucleus split achieves a similar separation on a smaller scale by drawing off bees, brood and queen cells into a box. Being able to say why a method fits the colony state — queen located, cells charged, space available — is the substance to rehearse, and it also teaches you the conditions under which a simplified version is appropriate.
Queen spotting and the marking colour cycle: a handling skill with a date rule
Locating the queen quickly and handling her confidently are core practical abilities. Learn the international marking colour cycle — white, yellow, red, green, blue repeating — so you can reason about a queen's age at a glance.
Train your eye systematically rather than hoping to stumble on her: she is longer and narrower than workers with a longer abdomen, she moves purposefully across the comb while workers cluster around her, and she is often on frames with fresh eggs. Use a clear glass or plastic substitute for practice, and learn the colour code cold: years ending in 1 or 6 are white, 2 or 7 yellow, 3 or 8 red, 4 or 9 green, 5 or 0 blue. When you spot an unmarked queen, you should be able to say what colour she would take this year and why.
Scenario two: you find an unmarked queen that you believe is in her third season, in a colony that has been building swarm cells. The plausible error is to decide on the spot to catch, mark and clip her during the same inspection — fumbled handling risks injuring or losing the most valuable individual in the hive. The better sequence is to confirm her presence and laying quality now, note the plan, and carry out marking or clipping on a dedicated, unhurried occasion with the right tools, or simply requeen with a marked queen as part of the swarm-control plan. Knowing when not to act is part of the judgement being assessed.
Varroa monitoring: matching the method to the reading and the season
Know the monitoring options — debris-floor counts over a set period, sugar roll, alcohol wash — and what a rising count implies. The learning task is interpreting a trend against colony status, not reciting a single universal threshold.
Practise each method with its characteristic interpretation. An open-mesh floor with a counting board gives a natural drop figure, but the number only means something per day and against the season: the same count in early spring and in late autumn points to different pressures, because brood area and mite reproduction inside capped cells both change. A sugar roll or alcohol wash estimates the mite burden on adult bees, with alcohol giving the more accurate reading but killing the sampled bees — a trade-off you should be able to explain.
The reasoning to rehearse runs from observation to action: a count that is climbing across consecutive checks in a colony with plenty of brood supports planning treatment rather than waiting, and the choice of treatment then depends on the season, whether honey for consumption is on the hive, and the risk of mites reproducing in capped cells where treatments cannot reach. Being able to connect a number, a date and a colony state into a management recommendation is the habit that transfers directly to assessment questions about pests and their management.
The yellow-legged Asian hornet: knowing what alert and reporting mean in practice
The BBKA actively promotes vigilance for the invasive yellow-legged Asian hornet. Learn how it differs from the native European hornet and what a beekeeper should do on a suspected sighting: observe, record, and report through official channels.
Distinguish the species by its markings: the yellow-legged Asian hornet is largely dark-bodied with a velvety thorax, yellow leg segments towards the tips, and an orange band on the abdomen segment nearest the waist — while the native European hornet is noticeably larger and much more yellow on the body. Predation tracking at the hive entrance, with hornets hovering and taking foragers, is the behavioural sign to mention.
Practise the response as a sequence: note the location, time and, if safe from a distance, a photograph; do not attempt to destroy nests yourself; and report through the channels the BBKA and the National Bee Unit promote, such as their reporting apps and contact routes. Framing it this way — observe, record, report, let the authorities handle intervention — is both correct practice and a clean answer to give when describing how you would respond to a suspected sighting.
A narrated-inspection exercise, rubric and adaptable preparation sequence
Rehearse a full inspection out loud on your own colony, score yourself against a rubric, and then build a season-long sequence that cycles through frame reading, swarm control, queen work and pest monitoring until each is fluent.
Exercise: with a helper filming or recording, open a colony and narrate continuously for one complete inspection — reason for the visit, handling, one brood frame read in full, a judgement on colony status, and the closing plan. Then score yourself against this rubric, aiming for improvement across sessions: you named what you saw on the frame before drawing a conclusion; you distinguished brood, stores and pollen accurately; you explained at least one decision with a reason tied to colony state; you handled frames and the queen without crushing bees; and you closed the hive with a stated follow-up action. Weakness in any line becomes the focus of the next session.
Adaptable sequence: spread this across the season rather than cramming. Early in active season, drill frame reading and healthy-brood baselines. As colonies build, walk through a full artificial swarm decision on paper and then apply the method if the colony demands it. Mid-season, complete queen spotting and marking practice plus varroa monitoring with recorded counts. Later, revise disease recognition against photos and reporting routes, and finish by repeating the narrated inspection until the rubric holds.
